What is the Centre

Putting people at the centre of suicide prevention in Wales

The National Centre for Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Research brings together leading experts, organisations, and lived experience to better understand, prevent, and respond to suicide and self-harm.

Led by Swansea University, in partnership with Cardiff University, the University of South Wales and Samaritans, the Centre drives evidence-based change in policy and practice across Wales.

Suicidal thoughts and self-harm can affect anyone. By recognising that these are rarely caused by a single factor, the Centre brings together researchers, services, policymakers, and people with lived experience to improve understanding and create meaningful, lasting change.

Funded by Health and Care Research Wales, it is focused on generating evidence, strengthening collaboration, and supporting people at risk.

What we do

The Centre focuses on:

  • Advancing research into suicide and self-harm
  • Placing lived experience at the centre
  • Informing policy and practice
  • Supporting communities and services
  • Developing future researchers

“Suicidal thoughts and behaviours and self-harm affect thousands of people across Wales, with lasting impacts on individuals, families and communities. This Centre will ensure that lived experience shapes the policies and support systems designed to help.”
