Our Research

The National Centre for Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Research, led by Swansea University in collaboration with Cardiff University, the University of South Wales and the Samaritans, brings together interdisciplinary expertise to advance suicide and self-harm prevention research in Wales.

Funded by Health and Care Research Wales and the Welsh Government, the Centre provides a national platform for high-quality, policy-relevant research.

Our research focus

  • Understanding the causes and contexts of suicide and self-harm
  • Identifying risk and protective factors across the life course
  • Evaluating effective interventions and prevention strategies
  • Embedding meaningful and ethical lived experience involvement
  • Translating research findings into policy and practice impact

Research environment

We work with linked population-level data and collaborate across disciplines including population data science, clinical research, public health, and social research.

We support early- and mid-career researchers and welcome collaborative proposals aligned with national suicide prevention priorities.
